13 GILDING IN DUNEDIN. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONDUNEDIN, Dec. 6. The value of the building permits issued in the city for April totals £'509,303, a record for Dunedin for eight months. Extra buildings at the exhibition are not included in tbis amount.
COAL ON RAILWAYS. WHANGAREI, Dec. 6. The Whangarei branch of the Enginedrivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association passed a resolution protesting against /the reintroduction of all New Zealand coal for locomotives. The resolution states that owing to the fumes from these coals and the heavy loads to- be hauled with the superheated class of engine, the health of the engine crews suffers and the safe running of trains is endangered. COAL MINES AGREEMENT. WESTPORT, Dec. 7. At Deimiston to-dav, on a- show of hands it was decided to accept the coal-mine owners’ terms for a workineagreement by 74 votes to 73. A good deal of dissatisfaction was expressed at the method employed in settling so grave an issue. Some suggested a. pit-mouth ballot, while others favoured a division being taken. Finally, without rescinding the former vote, a division was taken and the rejection of the proposal carried by 88 votes to 84. At Millerton the proposal was carried by an overwhelming majority.
