SWIMMING.

(By Silent Watcher). fhe public school has commenced in earnest this year. Over ICO boys came down one day last week under the control of Mr Bates, and went through an entirely new programme. The headpiaster himself went in the water with the boys and showed them how to swim, and also how to teach. The pupils took a keen interest in all that was said, psext day a large number of girls under three teachers went through a new role, those who can swim teaching those who cannot swim The St. Mary’s and Tawhiti children alos benefited by Mr Bates’ sound ideas. A successful year is predicted with conn deuce. No doubt the Technical school, who are busy with examinations, will arrive soon. The Swimming Club had' a successful and well-attended committee meeting at

the baths waiting-room last Monday, Mr Spragg being in the chair. A carniyal was arranged for Wednesday, December 17.

Many competitors are to be found training hard. Two of our greatest enthusiasts, Mr L. S. Poison and the captain, D. Laing, have net yet got into their stride, but no, doubt- will comedown about the middle of the month, when the sun gets stronger. The Borough Council, have again proved their desire to help the club. They are arranging aii exit through the side iiear the. Opera House, which will greatly assist and save the congestion after carnivals.

Mrs Higgs is still as keen as ever in teaching, and Miss Mather is to be seen in the early mornings teaching swimming and life-saving. At the opening of the baths in Wellington last .Saturday Hawera’s late popular captain, C. G. Barrett, was an interested competitor, and is still doing well, coming second with 3secs. start.

F. Ryan, late of Hawera. is reported to be receiving special advice from one of Wellington’s best.

The news of the sad ending of young O’G orman in Wellington last Saturday was received at the baths with regret. He was a very promising youth, and very keen on the great sport of sv i inuring.
