“GREEN FLAME” LOTTERY. Of 25,000 claims for rewards for spotting the “green-flame match,” only 4211 proved to. be correct. This statement was made in London recently at the hearing of an appeal by Mr. Andren, the managing director of a firm of match manufacturers, against a fine for running a lottery. Th© lottery consisted of offering a . reward to. anyone who found a match that burned with a green flaim. One such match was nut in every 2160 boxes sent out by the firm. Sir Edward Marshall. Hall, for the appellant, argued that the skill which enabled a person to detect the green match denoted a power of concentration which was one of tho rarest and most valuable possessions in anyone. Sir Edward struck one of the green flame matches, and then struck an ordinary match. “Did your Lordship see the difference?” he asked. Mr. Justice Avory: I did. (Laughter.) The Lord Chief -lustice said that except for a spark of liumour and a little advertisement there was nothing in the case. The appeal was dismissed.
