OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT. “THE ENTENAL CITY." ' The story of “The Eternal City,” which will be shown at the Opera House this evening, is as follows: —Bruno, a nondescript Italian peasant, has picked up young David when the latter’s mother was on her death-bed. Despite his thieving habits, Bruno fathers young David well, and eventually he wins a place in the home of Dr. Rosilli, pacifist. David is as good as adopted, and becomes a brother to black-eyed Roma, the doctor’s daughter. The Great War comes, and Dr. Rosilli succumbs to a heart attack. The friendless Roma is forced to accept the invitation of Baron Borelli, a. powerful politician, to go to Rome, where he promises to make her a, famous sculptress. David and Bruno join the colours. After the war there arises a leader to bring the people out of peril and establish, good government—Mussolini. David becomes involved in a quarrel with Minghelli, the baron’s secret agent. Another ideal is shattered when he leams that the Roma he is seeking is the notorious woman about whom, the .scandal of Baron Borelli centres. Meeting her, he tells her in one moment of his love for her, and in the next of his contempt. She finally convinces David of the truth, that the scandalmongers lie, and that she has been only a, ward to the baron. The men fight and the baron is shot, while the villa is being attacked at the same time by a. mob. Roma is denounced and accused of murder, but Mussolini
arrives on the scene, and. Roma is vindicated in every respect. She and David have the right to follow the love that has evaded them for years. A comedy and news are also to be shown. MANAIA TO-MORROW—MATINEE AND EVENING. “CHU CHIN CHOW.” The British producers send out another challenge to Hollywood with the wonderful British Master Picture, “Chu Chin Chow,” produced from the famous Oscar Asche play by Herbert Wilcox for Graham Wilcox productions. “Chu Chin Chow” is now a household word. The star is Betty Blythe, who is best known By her performance in ‘‘Queen of Sheba.” Over four thousand people acted in “Chu Chin Chow,” and a whole shipload of dromedaries was brought from Persia for the desert scenes, not to speak of Arab horses, elephants, lions, yaks, water buffaloes, and other curious beasts. The settings are very ambitious. Ten or twelve acres of old Bagdad were constructed for some of the scenes, and one building alone, the Great South Gate, was as large as St. Paul’s Cathedral, without the dome. Apart from the artists, “Chu Chin Chow” . kept several thousand-? workmen busy for four months. “Chu Chin Chow’’ will be presented at Okaiawa to-night and Manaia to-mor-row, matinee and evening. TO-MORROW NIGHT— ‘ ‘ CHILDREN OF THE DUST.” ‘ ‘ Children of the Dast, ” sho-wing tomorrow night, is the story of a boy called Terwilliger, an orphan who adopts as his father OldArcherj a .park caretaker in New York, As, a youth he falls an love with little Helen, a rich child. The development of this childhood romance, through the years constitutes the story of the picture. The excellent cast includes Johnny Walker, star of many Fox pictures, Pauline Garon, star’of' Cecil de Mille’s special feature “Adam's Rib,” and a notable group of character actors.
