FALSE PRETENCES.
YOUNG WOMAN’S LAPSE, BACHELOR DECEIVED. tBY TELEGRAPH —-PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Dec. 4. At the Police Court to-day Ethel May Jaques (27) was charged with an attempt to obtain from Alexander Boyd the sum of £2O by falsely representing to him that she was in a certain condition. Detective Nalder gave evidence that as a result of a complaint by Boyd he made investigations'. Boyd- was a single man. On, November 3 accused was engaged by Boyd as housekeeper, and a Week later she became engaged to Boyd. It was arranged that the wedding take place a fortnight later. Accused asked for various sums of money, arid was given a cheque for £25 and a further sum of £2o'. Accused later told Boyd that she would not marry him unless he settled a sum of money on her. Boyd iriade a will in the woman’s favour, J,is estate being £I6OO. Out of £75 she received she spent £25 on a ring and the balance on furnishing for a house. Sheleft Boyd’s employment on November 19 and later told him she was in a certain condition, and demanded £2O. At the detective’s suggestion Boyd replied to the letter and a meeting was arranged, when a male friend of the accused kept the appointment. The money was riot paid over. Accused pleaded- guilty. Mr Poynton admitted, her to probation for three years, adding: “But she will have to keep away from her male friend.”
