POLICE METHODS.
MAGISTRATE’S TRIBUTE. (BY TELEGRAPH PKKBB ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. A striking tribute to the methods adopted by the police in the course ot their duties was paid by Mr. E. Page, S.M., yesterday, when dealing with some allegations made by counsel appearing at the inquiry into the partial destruction of a motor-car in the Kaiwarra Gorge. Complaint was made at the beginning of these proceedings,” said, his Worship, ‘‘about the actions of the detectives. I think I ought to say something on that matter. The work of the detectives ami police is responsible, arduous, difficult, and sometimes dangerous. My experience of thenmethods, which extends over a decade, is that they carry out their duties with conspicuous fairness* and I have no reason to believe that they • have departed from that in the present' case.” On the question of the propriety o' making a statement to an officer, his Worship pointed out that it was the duty of the public to assist and not hamper the police in carrying out their duties. “The statute does not impose the obligation,” added the Magistrate, “but it should be observed as the duty of citizens in a law-abiding British communitv.”
