OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent). CHURCH OF ENGLAND BAZAAR. The members of the Church of England Ladies’ Guild have for some time past been preparing for the bazaar which opened in the Town Hall on Monday. The effort is in aid of funds to build a social hall, and the response from the public has been most gratifying to those concerned. The secretary (Mrs Solomon) proved a tower of strength to the committee, and her careful attention to details and efficient organisation is largely responsible for the success of the function. At 2 p.m. on Monday the Rev. C. W. Solomon, in a happy address, formally declared the bazaar open, and the various stallholders and assistants were promptly at work. Good attendances of the puolic during Monday afternoon and evening were fair game for the canvassers. On the closing evening (Tuesday) there was another large attendance, and excellent business was again done. The popular bachelor carnival run in connection with the bazaar created a great deal of interest, and was instrumental in adding to the takings by about £326. The Oaonui candidate (Mr H. Urbahn) was at the close of the poll returned as the winner by a fair margin. The voting was as follows: —H. Urbahn 11.235, Mr Bert Mann 8519, Mr H. J. Newman 6562.
