GREAT POSSIBILITIES.
FOR PRIMARY PRODUCERS
DENMARK’S EXAMPLE. Some idea of the great possibilities open to the primary producers in New Zealand was conveyed in a speech by Mr. A. T. Christensen, of Patea, yesterday, when at a farewell dinner to Mr. Grainger he quoted figures showing the high standard of productiveness to which the Danes had brought their land.
He said that during six consecutive months of 1924, which included four hard winter months with snow and ice on the ground, the Danes had produced and exported 62,348 tons of butter to various countries. At the same time they had exported 98,557 tons of bacon and pork and 401,000,000 eggs, which meant that for every lib of butter they had exported ljlb of bacon and 3 eggs. Besides this, the Danes wei’e able to produce enough beet sugar for their own consumption. The figures gave an indication of what was being lost in New Zealand, where we had better soil to work on and a better climate. In Denmark it wa.s all intensive farming, but it showed what could be got out of the byproducts by proper handling. In New Zealand nothing like the same proportion of by-products was being obtained.
