At the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Stringer and a special jury, Agnes Wright Stewart, a single woman, proceeded against Abram Wally Mahomed Salaman, who describes himself as an Indian herbalist, claiming £225Q general damages and £24 3s special damages for. alleged negligence and pain caused by his treatment, from October, 1923, till August, 1924. Counse for plaintiff said his client was 30 years of age. Until May, 1922, she was in good, health and employment. She had been managing a branch of a, business in Dunedin at £5 per week. After arrival in Auckland with her mother and sister she, in February of- last year-, developed exopthalmio goitre, and was treated,by Dr. Lowe, and also at the Auckland hpspital. She improved greatly, ana later was examined: by Dr. Horton, who said she was fit for an operation and that was the only; safe and proper course. However, friends advised her that Salaman could cui’e. her without ap operation. Salaman treated her with extraordinary mixtures and electric current. Plaintiff got ft, rse, and aijter nearly a year it was discovered that the basis of Salaman’s treatment was opium, and as a result- plaintiff contracted the opium habit, and it was questionable; whether the condition could be. successfully treated. Dr. Horton had seen her since, and declared that an operation was now absolutely impossible. The case is proceeding.
