In the bank case Francis Waters, solicitor, gave evidence that the aide-de-camp called on him on December 12 and told him of the Paris incident, witness advised him to do nothing until served with a petition in divorce. cide-de-camp and “Mister A” called on him on January 24, and said that they had settled the matter and had given two cheques each of £150,000. Witness expressed amazement. Mister A” and. the aide-de-camp both gave him to understand that they had P ai<a this huge amount under pressure in order to avoid a scandal. They also told him the names; of -the other parN ties to the matter. The first cheque ' Was . Mready cleared, but the second w’ae stopped on his advice. Witness interviewed Hobbs, who protested to *®prusent tne Appleton Company. Hobbs apparently readiiy acquiesced in the stoppage of the second cheque, and said that he would advise his client rr it in the fire. Witness told Hobbs that it was a regular blackmaillng. plot.
