BRITAIN’S BIG CAMPAIGN. .LONDON, Nov. 9. The discovery of a new disease communicable by rat-bite adds importance to the Rat Meek campaign just closed. The campaign was conducted with the co-operation of. councils, farmers, restaurant proprietors, factory mVners and householders. Thirty-five million baits were laid, in addition to gassing, causing , the extermination of 24,500,000 rats. Barracks, navy yards, .. refuse dumps and sewers were swept clear. . Rats annually cause . £15.000,000 worth of damage, every dozen costing £5. They are suspected of being active agents in the spreading, of foot and mouth disease.
The Vienna Doctors’ Congress has discovered that rat-bite communicates an illness similar to syphilis. It is characterised by a rash and feVer, hut may be cured by sal\*arsan injections. It is observed in all European countries, and may develop into an epidemic
