ALIENS IN BRITAIN.
MUST OBEY THE LAW. BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION-COPYEIGHT LONDON, Nov. 26. The Secretary of State for Home Affairs (Sir W. Joynson-Hicks), replying to a deputation, repeated his previqus statement that there were 272,000 aliens registered with the police in Britain. I So far as he was concerned, the administration of the existing Acts would be based on the principles that aliens desiring admission must prove they were coming for the good of this country, and secondly, any alien disgracing himself or breaking the law must be deported. He said there was an excess l of 10,000 immigrants in nine months compared with 1923, but the balance would probably be rectified by the end of the year. . Under the present law an alien could only come to take up employment if possessing written permission from the 'Ministry of Labour. Such was only granted in special cases. Alluding to the efforts to abolish the vise system, the Minister said that if the barrier were threwn down it would make the work of the immigration officers more difficult. . promised to consider the tightening up of the regulations to prevent evasions, and added: “It is remarkable; that while the Socialists declaim against the . condition of the workers heie, their friends, the Socialists from Eastern Europe, are pouring into Britain in order to secure better conditions than obtained in their own land.”
