ATTEMPTED MURDER.
HUSBAND ACQUITTED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT . SYDNEY, Nov. 25. I 1 rank Leighton, a well-known city merchant, appeared to-day on a charge of shooting his wife, Ethel Leighton, at Paddington on October 26, with intent to murder her. His wife was wounded in the head by a shotgun, being admitted to hospital in. a critical condition. The police evidence showed that when Leighton was charged he said li© was cleaning the gun, which went off and accidentally shot his wife. He was so overcome by the accident that lie. attempted to take his own life. Counsel for th© defence claimed that there was no. evidence against Leighton. The police magistrate ruled that there ifas .no case to answer,, and Leighton was discharged.
