A COMEDY
SCENE IN COURT
UNION SECRETARY’S RIGHT.
FAILS TO CONNECT. ’BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. Occurrences following on the intervention of Mr. F. Turley in th© Timber Workers’ case, at the Arbitration Court on behalf of the timber workers on the Main Trunk line, were quite out of the ordinary. Mr. B. L. Hammond, the empoyers representative, and Mr John Read, secretary of the Wellington Timber Workers’ Union, presented a solid front to Fred Turley (secretary of the New Zealand Timber Workers’ Federation), who sought to oppose the registration of an agreement which had been reached at the Council. References to each other were not of a kindly type, and eventually, after Mr. Read had alluded to Turley as being as slippery as an eel and as elusive as a wasp, Mr. Turley retorted: “Anyway, I’ve never taken a bribe.” Mi\ Read turned round and lunged out with his right fist, which, however, did not connect with Turley, who had taken cover under the table. . Mi’. Glover (president of the Alliance of Labour), who also was near Mr. Read, was equally in danger of a knock-out, but just escaped the full fore© of the blow.
Mr. Read and Mr. Turley then apologised to the court and the proceedings were, resumed.
