HAWERA OPERATIC SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. EXCELLENT YEAR’S WORK. After a most successful year the Ha-' wera Amateur Operatic Society last night held their annual meeting in the Borough Council Chambers. There was an attendance of about 40 members, and the president (Mr H. L. Spratt) was in the chair. In moving the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet, the chairman congratulated the society on the year’s successful operations. It was pleasing, he said, to see the interest that had been maintained in the society and to note the large bank balance. Some of the new. members, would realise that they were connected with no small undertaking when he mentioned that the committee would next year face with confidence an expenditure of £SOO or £6OO. The winter time, said the chairman, was spent very happily by the society, last year 130 people being 1 involved in the production of “Our Miss Gibbs.” The balance-sheet showed the total receipts during the year to amount to £642 Is 3d, leaving a cash balance in the bank, after all expenses were met, of £175 12s- 4d. Besides this the society had assets to the value of £244 2s 4d. . . The adoption of the balance-sheet was seconded by Mr Kineton Parkes and carried. It was decided that the society’s annual social function should this year* 7 take the form of a picnic at the Opunake beach on December 3. Mr Burdekin moved that the committee be authorised to pay out-of-pocket expenses of members who, with the authority of the wardrobe mistress, provided shortages in their. wardfeobe. Mr Osborne thought that such a provision would lead to trouble, and on other members expressing similar views it was decided that the committee be recommended to favourably consider an. arrangement for defraying out-of-pocket expenses, where members taking a part found jt. necessary to supplement the wardrobe.

A resolution which debarred members who took a part in an onera from taking a seat on the committee was rescinded. v

Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr HI L. Soratt; vice-presidents, Dr. McGhie -r /-t ,J^ Mackenzie; secretary, xr 1 -d ' v P® b . orne: committee, Messrs H. B. Burdekin, W. G. Hoddle, W. D. Johnson. J. M. Townsend, and MesWoodson and Mcßeth. This concluded the business, and the meeting then adjourned.
