P.P.A. ESSAYS.
not wanted by board
TOO MUCH COMPETITION.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONDUNEDIN, Nov. 20. At a recent meeting the Otago Education Board refused a request from the "Otago branch of the Protestant Political Association that it should permit an essay competition to be held in schools under its control for prizes provided by the association.
Yesterday the Board had another letter from the P.P.A. before it, renewing the request, and explaining there was no intention that the association should co-operate with the Board in the matter. The prizes were to be provided by an Otago resident., and the idea of the competition was to stimulate interest in history among the higher standards of the schools. The work would be adjudicated upon bv tlie Board’s inspectors.
The chairman of the Board said that, they should not- have more essays in the schools of a competitive nature. The Navy League essays were quite enough; in fac-t; he sometimes thought that they should cut them out. In Otago the inspectors had no time in which to take on any other work. If the P.P.A. wanted to promote an essay Competition it should advertise and conduct it on its own. The schools should hot be used for the purpose. The previous decision was adhered to.
