THE LABOUR PARTY.
(To the Editor.)
'Sir,-r-In yesterday’s leader you criticise the Labour Party for some of its sins; but to my mind their wprst sin is in creating a god, naming it free trade, and then worshipping it. The lady speaker for the Labour Party was very anxious to commence trading with Russia and have the British Government grant them a huge loan to start with. Would it not be much better to try to keep British trade in British hands by . a system of preferential tariffs? I'would agree with the Labour Party that universal free trade would be the ideal, but do not like the idea of England being made the dumping ground for the surplus products of highly protected countries. Another thing I might mention is that the Labour Party is the only party in the world to-day that is working’ in the interest of universal disarmament. UnJess something is done to prevent it the nations will be putting their resources into armies and navies, and leaving the huge social evils practically untouched. If war cannot be avoided it would only lie fair to start the next scrap from "scratch, instead of having one nation armed; to the teeth and practically all the rest of the earth having to combine to be strong enough to beat her. God is still on the side of the big battalions.—l am, etc., BAKBLOX. Hawera, Nov. 19.
