"VYinners at Ashhurst engaged at Levin will have to carry lOlbs'at that meeting to-morrow. As a good measure of rain has fallen at Levin the race track will be in good order for the annual gathering. The Ashhurst Racing Club is a favourite body with owners and public alike., and the class of horses racing there was particularly good when one considers the prize money. Vail a, who ha.s. shown’ a. Jot of pace in recent races, received a bad kick recently, and in consequence Trainer W • Dwyer had to ease her in work. Ruby Ring was paying little over “evens” for the Sberia Hack at Ashburst. Jumping out well. she had every chance and failed Badly. Miiraalii looked well when sent to the post for the Ashhurst. Cup, but although ridden by H. Gray he was paying over a “score.”, “ Muraahi went well foi* a time.
Master Sandstone showed; very poor form at Eiccarton, but it was not correct, tor this gelding is decidedly useful. He is engaged at the Levin meeting to-morrow.
Dangle and Tutankhamen each ran well in the Siberia Hack at Ashhurst, but it is doubtful if the form equalled that of Degage at Riccartou.
Te Kawai was “in the market” at Ashhurst, but the fast pace set gave him a difficult task with his load of 9.9, and he was beaten before turning into; the straight, but he ran a good honest llace. \
Since joining O. McOarten’s team Enthuse bias built up, and may pay his way When the company is not too select.
General Pryde, which has shown good form in and around Auckland without getting on the winning list may he brought south for the Taranaki Christmas meetings. Zaz’a showed a lot of pace in the Maiden at Ashhurst and won nicely at the finish. He is engaged at Levin to-morrow, but will encounter stronger opposition. • . It is stated that for a time Ihapotoa. contracted the bad habit of eating her bedding, hence the poor form she displayed for ia time. Her form at Ashhurst suggests that Ihapotoa will again show up in the near future. Santonin■ finished remarkably fast in the six furlong; handicap at Ashhurst, and his .supporters were unlucky in not getting a. dividend, hut may have better luck at Feilding. Starshell was a big favourite for the Maiden Stakes at the recent Ashhurst meeting, but although favoured with a favourable position at the harrier and ’ the- services of H. Gray Star'shell failed, and evidently is only a moderate.
Puw-hero was a big tip for the jumping event at Ash-hurst, hut' suffered defeat by inches. As he stripped somewhat on the “pretty r side.” P,uwliero may do better at Feikling next week.
At the turn for hpipe First Salute was going <is yell as any other runner in the Ashhurst Clip. b,ut weakened over the last lurlong. This gallop will improve him. Garclant showed plenty of pace at Ashihurst last Wednesday, and if taken through for the Levin meeting tomorrow should certainly show up well in the> Maiden Hack. P antler ran his host race to date when he won the Ashhurst Cup on Wednesday, and as the son. of Banmurc scored decisively from a. good ’field the 101 b penalty, incurred for the Levin Cup should not deter bettors from, supporting him, Although he failed to pay a dividend, All Melody ran a. fine race at Ashlninst, and if a runner at Levin tomorrow this son of All Bed should make the Hurdles interesting. Sottano (Nassau—Cossack) finished remarkably well in his only start at Ashhurst, and with ai nine pound advantage in the weights as compared with Ashhurst may turn the tables on Puketoi at the Levin meeting. Sir Pam, carrying 2Ubs overweight, won all the yay at Ashhurst. but had very little to spare from Prince Hal, and the penalty incurred /at Ashhurst will m'ake Sir Pam’s task much more difficult at Levin.
Prior to l the Caryterbury Jockey Club’s meeting the' “hack” Waetea was responsible for excellent work at Trentha-m, and more than one' good judge gave her an outside chance in the New Zealand Cup, but a mishap on the steamer prevented Waete'arunning, but will start at Levin tomorrow.
