WATER SUPPLY.
PROBLEM SOLVED. For some time past the question of water supply ha s been causing some concern in Takapuna, but, according to the New Zealand Herald, a solution of the problem has been discovered by the resident engineer for the district, Mr. Archibald Slinger. The new source of supply is to consist of the tapping of underground springs which have been discovered at the western side of Lake Pupuke. One of Mr. Slinger’s first jobs in connection with the borough was conqerned with the outlet of the u airau Stream. His first survey of the neighbourhood satisfied him that the comparatively small volume of the creek was altogether out of proportion to the rainfall on its watershed. How, ' £ ..f' 11 .’, d’d the water from the back hillsides flow to the sea 0 The problem was interesting, and Mr. Slinger soon found its solution. Other data which he collected led him to the conclusion that there must he a copious underground stream, separate from the body ot water in the bed of the stream amt distinct from the lake. The upmot of his deliberations was that he recommended the Borough Council to bore or sink in a localitv which he would indicate, and staked his professional reputation that an expenditure ;>t a lew hundred pounds would result ui the discovery of water, abundant is to quality, and probably, from the circumstances of its production—filtering as it did through solid rock—of good quality. Successful' experiments were carried out, and nlans have already been made for the formation ot a reservoir, where, it is intended, orovision will he made for the accumulation of about a million gallons or water.
