SPLIT NOTES
r CIRCULATING IN HAWERA. POLICE ACTIVITIES. ; WARNING TO SHOPKEEPERS. : “ T " - ; - [lt! has transpired that /bogus. T £1 notes are in circulation in Ha■wera. The police have the matter in hand, and issued an express 'warning to shopkeepers to examine closely every note handed over to /them.] /-This is the sequel to complaints made, tojthe police of many, towns in the Dominion. It will be remembered that in the Hawera Star a few weeks ago a message was received : from Christchurch statifig that the police had great difficulty in securing the persons responsible for the circulation of split notes. Quite recently Wellington was troubled with the same elass of offence, and in Auckland a Chinaman was imposed'upon and actually gave eighteen sKiiliigs in change for a note which Tfas.afterwards found to be split. 'Evidently a gang, or a member of it, have or has considered that Hawera might prove a shade more comfortable for the passing of bogus notes than any of-; the four centres, but the /watchful. eyes of Hawera’s police are on them and their reign will undoubtedly be' short. The police have secured one of the split £1 notes, and to-day they have warned shopkeepers generally to beware of all note received, ajid showed them, the note in their possession. -■ ,
V Some time 'ago attention was drawn to split £1 notes being in circulation (states the Stratford Post.) . On Tues/ day a case of a split 10s mote / was brought under notice, and the back of such a. note got into circulation, but exactly in what way is not known. The fact is again mentioned, to emphasise the grave necessity for examination of a|l bank notes tendered from whatever source. .
