KAPONGA TOWN BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The lvaponga Town Board met on Tuesday evening. There were present: Commissioners A. It'. Bates (chairman), E. A. Law, D. J. Kehely, It, E. Williams, J. Dawson, A. J. Herbert, and Messrs A. E. Moss (engineer), and G. P. Cook (clerk). APPRECIATQRY. The clerk was directed to convey to the Attorney-General (the Hon. Bir Francis' Bell) and Mr O. J. Hawken, M.P., the board’s sincere appreciation of the courtesy extended and the consideration they had ' shown respecting the requirements 'of the district in having had included in the Washing-up Bill the clause correcting an error in the special rate securing the Board’s Electrical Extension Loan of £IO,OOO. ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The report of the electrical engineer (Mr A. ‘ E. Moss), as follows, was adopted:— The' supply to the country has been maintained at a astisfactory voltage this month by running the plant under reduced water in conjunction with Opunake supply. There is as yet no word of the alterantor for No.. 1 plant. It should be ready for return this week. On. arrival it will he necessary to shirt down No. 1 for a day. I then propose to arrange to make some repair to the pipe line to carry over until the new pipe referred to in a separate report is ready. ‘ Some extra copper has been erected on the Duthie Road, and a considerable improvement effected in the motor service. A transformer .and service lias been erected*, to give a supply to the hew digester plant being erected by Mr Williams. Several crossings to conform kith P. and T. requirements have been erected on the'(routes' of new telephone services. The board’s motor car has been stripped, and is being repainted and overhauled by the staff. . During a subsequent discussion the engineer mentioned that no ; provision was made for power charges other than lighting, milking plant and factory requirement's. On his suggestion it was decided to make charges for requirements other than already provided for, similar to those in vogue under the Taranaki Electric Power Board scheme. WORKS COMMITTEE,.
Recommendations of the Works Committee were adopted as follows: —The regular work for the ensuing month to be the continuation of clearing the water-tables and footpaths under the direction of the chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. D. J. Keheley); completion of top dressing with pit metal of'Kapuni Street and the turn from Manaia Road to Kapuni Street; completion of culvert at the corner of the Eltham-Manaia roads intersections and erection of the fence at the bridge; .completion of work to cemetery entrance and gate. It was further decided to. procure 50 yards of sand required for top-dressing of roads by the County Council; also that- tenders be called top painting' the Town Hall and office, certain minor exterior repairs and interior ' replacements, including the provision of a new slide in the kitcheii to be put in hand immediately. FOREMAN’S REP.ORT. The foreman (Mr A. Melville) reported that during the month tarring on the Eitham Road had been finished, a couple ojt drums of restar being left over. The report requested that residents of the town be warned of the danger of blocking the sewerage system consequent upon* carelessness in allowing rubbish to enter the drains. Oh a rectent morning the septic tank had been blocked by a kapoc cushion, which had evidently been put in the drain, and reaching the tank had formed a solid ball, '.which blocked the filter. The report further stated that- this sort of thing lia3. lately occurred frequently, ah'd drew attention to the serious results. which would follow if greater care was hot exercised by those using* the drains. The report was adopted, the chairman remarking that in the protection of their own interests town residents should consider the' warning given.
TOWN POUND. A letter was received from the Eltham County Clerk (Mr A. Tiplady), stating that the ranger had drawn attention to the fact that- the entrance to Kaponga pound was of such a. nature as to cause considerable trouble in impounding stock. The ranger stated that by the time lie got the gate open cattle he was trying, to impound usually broke away. It was requested that the hoard consider the matter with a view to improving 'conditions. Qr. Dawson explained that the ranger wanted a small holding 'yard provided at the entrance to the pound proper. The chairman referred, to the very useful services rendered by the ranger, and considered that the board should endeavour to meet the wishes of the county council. It was decided to have the work effected.
GENERAL. An application was received from a town resident requesting permission to erect a temporary wooden building, not on a concrete foundation, within the town area.—Permission was refused, on the grounds that the site indicated was within the area in which it was required that new buildings be of brick or concrete construction. Accounts totalling £962 7s 10d were passed -for payment.
