SHIPPING DISPUTE.
COMPULSORY CONFERENCE
BY. CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, Nov. 18. ' On the application of the Commonwealth Shipping Line, Mr. Justice Powers, of the Federal Arbitration Court, has called a compulsory conference in connection with the dispute between the Commonwealth Line and the Seamen’s and Stewards’ Unions to be held at Melbourne on Friday.
OVERTIME STRIKE LIFTING
SYDNEY, Nov. 18. A settlement has been reached in the b erndale dispute and the twelve men s^lip "ho were objected to left the ship unconditionally, leaving the way clear for the management to engage a new crew. The trouble on the Moreton Bay continues, the _ management remaining adamant _in its refusal to employ any of the dismissed stewards on anv passenger ship. Consequently all the Commonwealth steamers arriving in the near future may be laid up by the maritime unions. The fight by the Watersiders’ Federation against the shipping bureau has not prospered. The overtime strike has lifted so far as inter-State boats are concerned, but not in respect of overseas steamers, which almost exclusively .employ -bureau labour. The Watersiders’ Federation and the sea transport group of unions are now hard put to it to find a solution of the posi--1 tion they have placed themselves in.
