MANAIA TOURNEY. WON BY TIRIMOANA. ‘ ./The concluding pulls in the tug-of-war.. tournament organised .in support of the sports, candidate contesting the Manaia queen carnival were decided, in •the Manaia Town Hall “on Friday evening, before a large audience. As was indicated hy the results of the preliminaries, on Wednesday evening, the tourney,..was rhon hv.'Tirimoana who maintained their unbeaten record and secured the maximum number of 10 points. Riverdale, who were defeated by the winners only, took second prize \yith 8 points, and Kaponga, who lost to both the winners and runners up, in-third position with 6 points. The order of the remaining teams w^si 4 points, Tanngatara 2, and Kaupokonui nil. The Tirimoana,aiid Kaponga teams on Friday were as published on ThursdayIn the Riverdale. team, G. Taungatara, who failed to attend, defaulted to Tirimoana and Maoris. Kaupokonui defaulted to Kapoiiga. Contesting second place,., Riyerdale, beat Kaponga after an (exciting bout ,u^ic^^untU i;; the,vconoluding,. ; sec Q nds, showed to the advantage of, the losers. •With; the first strain, the - ribbon showed slightly in favour of Kaponga, who held an inch at the call of one minute. At two minutes Kaponga’s lead had been increased to two inches, a fur- - tlier half-inch being gained during the ./next'minute) A fierce struggle in v the following thirty seconds gave no alteration, but the ensuing fifteen saw- the ribbon sway to within, half an inch of ceiitre, ; and with' three seconds' to go Rivcrdale’s final effort secured them the decision by half an inch. Burke, who suitably congratulated the winning teams and complimented all -in v the- competition on their (worthy showing. Commending Tirimoana bn maintaining their unbeaten record, Mr. Burke said he felt sure that the (best wishes-.for their success in the New Zealand championship, which they -Were to contest; at Timaru next DeIcembor., /would bo extended by all followers , of. sport throughput Taranaki. -The. respective •captains, AY. Mr. Burke also expressed appreciation of the public support ac-' .corded, and thanked all who had contributed items or assisted in the administration of the tournament,. making special mention of the services rendered as. pianiste by Mias M. Long. 'ln conclusion, he paid.a tribpte to the work pf the hon. secretafj', Mr* W. J. Hadley. 'T A short programme of. enjoyable 'concert items submitted at intervals during the Evening provided an appreciated auxiliary to the; entertainment. (Vocal solo's were contributed by Mesdames C. Burke (“Island of Dreams' ’ and,. “Old. : Erin’’) and L. R . Freeman (“Let the Great Big World Keep Turning”' and “Little Girl, Little Roy”), the Misses G. Bennett (“Wbpre. thfe Shamrock Grows’.’ and “Sleepy Seas”), and C. Vine (“Mother .Maohree” and “Waiting”) and Messrs T. \Cpleman (“Gra Madhree,” “Girl, from Glare,” “Irish Mother” and “Annie Laurie”), G. P. Cottrell (“There’s a Garden” and “Bulls;-Ml Bellow”) and J. A. Eilkington (“Mellow Moon”). Three instrumental items (“Hawaiian, NatonaL Anthem,’V “Taton .Tatou’/ and “Hie Rpsary”), pleasingly rendered by Mr. Elkington on his Hawaiian harip guitar, also l>roved exceedingly popular. ' ' Following the prize presentation, the floor of the hall . was cleared; and . a dance . programme . gave continued attraction until its conclusion in the small hours of the morning.. Air. F. Landers . attended to the M.C.’s duties, music being provided by Mesclamea L G. Mud ford. and )A. AlcCracken, who shared duties- as pianistes, and J. Co^rove (cornet), T. (Hotter (euphonium) and E.
