TEN YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT,
WITH A FLOGGING.
[That Judges in New Zealand intend to carry out the wishes of the people and inflict heavy sentences bn these who commit the most heinous offences against society is evident from the sentences passed, to-day on two men, one of whom will receive a flogging.] AUCKLAND, Nov. 17At the Supreme Court, Frederick Edward Peitro Shortland (24) was sentenced to 10 years and a flogging for rape. Mr Justice Herdman, commenting, Said the prisoner was guilty of a callous and heartless outrage on a defenceless woman with whom he had kept company for 18 months. Edward Lesky, two charges of indecent assault on two little girls, one of common assault on a little girl, and assault on Miss Minnie Salek, with intent to do grievous bodily harm in Albert Park, was sentenced to 11 years’ hard labour.
