Rain fell o\ r ernight, but the Aveather was fine by midday, play being resumed on a wet wicket. It ivas drying fast and the ball cut through, the conditions being favourable to England. When stumps Avere drawn on Friday England had made 113 for three wickets in the opening innings. Yesterday the not out men—Woolley 40 and Hendren 16 —resumed, Hendren hitting four off Hendry. Liddicutt was unplayable to Woolley. Woodful, at niia-on, caught Hendren, and Wallace was cheered for a magnificent catch when he ended the innings of Woolley, which had lasted 113 minutes. . Whysall was' uncomfortable. The fielding was accurate, and Ryder, standing close in, smartly caught Whysall off Liddicutt. Douglas, who was next, was cheered by the crowd of 25,000 which packed the stands. Ponsford, fielding in the outfield, dismissed Kilner by taking a great catch. Douglas played more cautiously, hut the excitement was intense when he was nearly run out as the result of a quick return by Wallace. Ho pulled Tarrant (who at this stage had the best average, viz., two for 50) to the pickets, and faced Hendry at the other end. He .was driving strongly, and when Ryder replaced Hendry Douglas hanged him for four. Runs were now scarce, Bryan playing, a defensive game, while Douglas was often spectacular. Wallace then took a dropping catch from Bryan. Gilligan came in, -being loudly cheered by the crowd. Douglas was in the fifties and playing solidly, while Gilligan Avas sneaking singles. Then Ryder took Gilligan’s middle stump. Douglas played a sterling innings, and hit six boundaries. Ryder wae the best man on the ground. Hendren and Gilligan received an ovation. The innings closed for 240. . • Mayne and Park opened for Victoria, Kilner bowling the former in the first oyer. Hendry, who came next, was greeted with cries of “Storky.” . Gilligan had Park in difficulties, and play was dead. Park Avas nearly run out for Freeman, who was mixing his deliveries. Hendry pulled him for three. Woolley . replaced Kilner at the other end. Park was now playing Freeman with confidence. Hendry three and ’a two, hut he should have been stumped at 17. Hendren’s returns were anplauded. Hobbs dropped Hendry at 18 off Woolley. Park hit the first four off Gilligan. When stumps were drawn Victoria had two wickets down for 44. Details: ENGLAND. First Innings. WESTERN PROVINCES' MATCH,
CAPETOWN, Nov. 15. The English cricketers, in their first innings against the Western Provinces, made 252 for mne wickets, when they declared. Holmes made 41. Kennedy (67) and Parker (51) added 86 for the last Avicket. Western Provinces, in their first innliige, made 118. Kennedy took five "ickets for 52 runs and Parker four for 27. Western Provinces , followed on, losing eight wickets for 82 runs. BoAvley took three wickets for 18. The match Avas drawn. PLAY IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Nov. 16. For WaA r erley against Gordon, Collins made 132 not out. For Manlv against University, Minnett made 69, and also took three University Avickets for 34 runs. Bubb took six Avickets for 42. For Glebe against St. George, Morgan made 146. For Western Suburbs against Balmain Bardsley made 103. For North Sydney against Cumberland, Kyle made 116 not out.
