ELECTRIFICATION QUESTION

SUBURBAN SECTIONS. INQUIRY IN PROGRESS. (By Telegraph.—Special to. Star). WELLINGTON, Nov. 14. The investigation of the suburban railway sections with a view to possible electrification, is proceeding,- Mr E. J. Grove, chief electrical engineer for the firm of Merz and McLellan, having already spent several weeks on the New Zealand railway system for the purpose c.f preparing the firm’s report. They have been asked to state the cost of electrifying the four suburban railway systems of the Dominion and generally to indicate running conditions and costs under electrification. Messrs Merz and McLellan are among the leading consulting engineers c.f the world on railway electrification. They have a large railway electrification scheme in hand in South Africa, and Mr Grove, their representative, was in charge of the electrification of the Melbourne suburban scheme. He has made a general survey of Auckland conditions, and left to-night for the South Island to inspect Christchurch and Dunedin railways.
