SEASON OPENING DAY

Attracted by the. prospects' of an enjoyable afternoon’s tennis under ideal conditions, an enthusiastic gathering of players attended at the Te Ngutu Park courts on Wednesday afternoon on the occasion of the club’s official opening of the season’s play. A combined doubles 40 up open handicap tournament provided an interesting exhibition, and resulted in victory to the only scratch players, Aliss E. o’Dowd and C. Paterson (club captain). The handicaps were declared by Air C. Paterson (patron), who, with the president. Air G. and Air C. Paterson junir., shared the umpire’s duties/ Meeting in the final, the winners and Airs A. Freeman and C. Whalen (handicap 1) gave the most attractive display ,of the tournament. Keen interest prevailed as the play progressed, and the scores, always separated by a. narrow margin only, showed in ’ varying stages in favour of either pair, aiid a round of applause greeted the scratch players when with, the scores, 38—36, in their favour, 'they gained the two final strokes, which secured first honours. Congratulations upon their excellent play were also extended, to the runners-up. The preliminaries resulted as follow: First Round.
