A Gisborne message 4 reports the death of Mr. George Matthewson, a very old settler, who served on many public bodies. The death of Sir Archibald Geikie, the noted geologist, aged 89. is announced in a London cable. He was a member of numerous ’ scientific academies throughout the world, and wrote many books dealing with geology. Cable advice received by the Shaw, Savill Co. advises the death of Captain J.. L. Jones, of the Athenic, on November 8, six days after leaving Balboa for Auckland. The vessel is due at Auckland on November 24. The deceased was formerly chief officer of j lonic, and afterwards commander of the Gallic, the Medic, and the lonic, and on the retirement of Captain Crossland he was appointed to the Athenic last November.
Mr. Hugh Hunger, who has held the position of teller in the Manaia branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the last four years, has been transferred to Christchurch. The public will reS re t his departure. .He was very courteous and obliging as an official of the bank. The citizens of Manaia and district congratulate him on his promotion.
death occurred on Monday of Mr. Frank Dwan (the Dominion reports). The deceased, who died under an operation, was the eldest son of the late Alonzo Dwan, and the nephew of Messrs. T. and L. Dwan, of v\ elhngton. He was an old pupil of St. Patrick’s College, and had been very ill for some time owing to an accident. to his eyes, and was partially blind for a number of years. The late Mr. Dwan was 1 associated with music at Buckle Street Church for some years, and was highly respected by everyone who knew him.
The death took place very suddenly on Monday morning of Mrs. Meyer, wife of Mr. F. H. Meyer, builder, of Wellington. The late Mrs. Meyer was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Twist and was bom at Oriental Bay 50 years ago. Although Mrs. Meyer had been in failing health for a couple of years her passing away was totally unexpected. Mrs. Meyer is survived by her husband, three sons and three daughters, among them being Mrs. H. Wagistaff of New Plymouth.
