PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING,
ROUTINE MATTERS
Tlie monthly meeting of the Patea County Council was held yesterday, when there were present: Crs Jas. Gibbs (chairman), Back, McDonald. Watkins, Seown and Belton. Leave of absence was granted Crs Taylor, Alexander, and Sutherland.
Mr W. J. Davis wrote asking the Council to replace a couple of posts, and a. gate broken by the Council's' horses.—Councillors agreed that they should meet Mr Davis in the matter, and the 'application Avas left Avith the engineer to deal Avith.
The Council decided to pay an ac count of £7 10s, being the cost of re
pairs to a motor cycle damaged as the result of a Collision Avith one of*the Council’s drays.
In connection with a letter from the Commissioner of Ci-oavu Lands dnnving attention to the state of the Purarat.'t road, the Council decided to reply stating that the matter had been referred to the engineer, who had been instructed to carry out repairs as far as funds would permit.
The chairman mentioned that the Borough Council had stated their Avillingness. to contribute £IOO tOAvards the cost of a filling near the station. — j The;; Gounc.il.. decided to accept the offer; . . \ ' I ' ENGINEER\S REPORT. | The engineer’s report on the work of tjhe past month Avas as follows: Main Road and General: The whole of ‘ 1 Derrett ’s ’ ’ length is uoav complete except for the small deAdated length at Hird’s corner and the final sealing coat. The Patea hill length is also metalled and grouted on the length at the top of the hill beyond the contract. The roller and party are uoav completing the metalling and grouting of the piece between the contract and the Patea- bridge. As soon as this is | complete the roller and party will proceed to Moumahaki to do the two lengths there, amounting to .105 chains in all. The filling at Hird’s corner deviation is also, nearly complete, but still requires AA T idening on the seaAvard side. The contractor on the Patea hill has commenced and is making very good progress. Metal in anticipatfou of the Avorli Iras been taken at Moumahaki, and the supply of bitumen for •the whole of the year’s work has come to hand and been distributed to the various stations. The full list of Government grants ig placed before you, # and 6A T eiy effort will be made to make as much use of the same this current year.
Otoia West: The contractor on the Alton Gorge, is making good progress, and should complete in five or six weeks. The. metalling of Foreman’s road has been held up by other metalling Avorks, the Te Wera metal coming to hand A r ery slowly. The Wilson road at Kakaramea has been prepared for metalling according to schedule, and some of the metal laid in position. A short length has also been completed on the Kakaramea road to complete the Government assisted Avorks. A Government grant has been made for metalling on the Makino road, and plans will be prepared and submitted for expending this amount. Work as authorised at last meeting on the Ball road tracks has been commenced and is proceeding satisfactorily. A filling has been made at the bad corner on Geary’s road.
Otoia East: A deputation from the Council waited upon the Borough Council with reference to assistance towards the filling to the Patea station. No further word has yet been received from the Railway Department as regards the drainage of this creek, and -until some finality is reached in this respect this work will be held up. A small length of the, Opaku road adjoining the Whenuakura factory has been bitumen grouted in connection with the improvements the dairy company has carried out to its private roads. A short length of metalling has been done on the -Otauto road to complete the Government assisted work, and also three trucks of the Kakarilci metal, which has come to hand from the Rangitikei County Council, have been laid on this road as a trial.
Waverley: The metalling on the Waitangi road has been completed. The grader has completed the Kohi, and is working down the Karahako road. Metal is coming to Waverley racecourse in anticipation of the Kohi and Karahake road metalling. Two slips in the Kohi gorge came down recently and have been cleared. Moumahaki: The balance of the metalling to be carried out on the State Farm road (Ngutfiwera hill) has been carried out, and also some more urgent metal patching on this same road. Elsewhere there is little to report. The big sanstonc slip on the Block C> hill has come down again and meii are engaged on it. Kapara Riding: An inspection has been made of the Makakalio and Te Ngaue roads. The subsidence in the new bank on the latter road is being filled and made good. Comvay, the surfaceman, has resigned, and "as yet no appointment lias been made in his stead. The report was adopted.
