REMOVING TREE STUMPS.
LEVER AND PULLEY COMBINATION.
Most bush settlers are familiar .with the “forest devil” stump extractor, which is simply a long beam anchored to a tree or stump as fulc-rum, with a chain running from the short end to the stiimp to be extracted. The beam is first pulled forward as a lever of the first order, and then pulled back as a lever of the second order, loosening the stump still more. A combination of lever and pulleys is employed in the stump extractor illustrated. The beam is anchored to the stump by a chain. A pulley block is chained to the beam at a short distance from the anchor chain, and a loose pulley is hooked on to the stump to be extracted by means of another chain. A wire rope or chain is then run through the blocks, as shown in the illustration and fastened to the beam 18ft from the fulcrum.
