CONVICT SHOT.
ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE
WOUNDS END FATALLY
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Nov. 8. The notorious convict Joseph Thomas Christie attempted to escape from Mount Eden prison yesterday afternoon. He refused to stop when 'challenged by a warder, who fired, wounding Christie, one shot entering the arm and another his leg. Christie was admitted to hospital at midnight, his condition being rather serious. Christie has a long prison, record. He escaped twice from the Mental Hospital at Auckland, whence he had been transferred after receiving sentence for various offences. He reached Sydney, and was deported from Australia.
Christie died at 9.30 this morning
