LOCAL AND GENERAL.

— The receipts from the performance of “Florodora” in the Eltham Town Hall on Monday night were £BS. A gentleman strolled into the Whangarei Post Office the other day and requested the use of the telephone. He was referred to the penny-in-the-slot machine outside, and returned shortly afterwards with the information that he had put his penny in, but had received a stamp in exchange. The train wound its way through the Manawatu Gorge (says the Manawatu Times), the precipitous cliffs looming majestically on either side, and the swollen torrent roaring over the rocks below. “Truly,” said a Palmerston North resident to the other occupant of the seat in the carriage, “the gorge is an impressive sight.” The speaker’s companion, a foreigner with horn-rimmed glasses, stroked his chin. “Waal, now,” he drawled, “if we had that river in America we’d marp it up with a sponge!” There are more things likely to hapnen to a person on a racecourse than the losing or winning of money, states the Southland News. As the field tore into- the straight in a certain race at Gore an excited onlooker greeted the advance of the equines with the shout: “He’s not trying! He’s not trying!” The last word was barely uttered when the person responsible for the denunciation received a stinging blow on the head. He had been standing beside an owner of one of the horses engaged, who, it is more than obvious, took the remark to he a reflection on himself. The sequel, it is understood, will take place before the proper authorities. During recent months business men’s dinners have been held under the auspices of the Hawera Retailers’ Association. They have been well attended, and have enabled the business people to meet and discuss questions of importance to the town. The community lighting scheme, which will be ready before the Egmont Show opens, was given the necessary impetus at the first business men’s dinner, and it can be said that the functions have been very successful. The busy season of the year is at hand, and in view of this the Retailers’ Association decided at last night’s meeting to discontinue the monthly dinners for a period, after which the question will again he considered. Success demands a clear head, not one stuffed up with colds. Business men everywhere shy clear of colds and stuffy heads by keeping Baxter’s Lung Preserver always within reach on their desks. Born over fiftyfive years ago, this unrivalled cold controller still keeps on keeping everybody healthy, and happy. An ideal tonic, too! Braces you up—niakps you fit — keeps you fit! Fidelity to one’s religion in any of its widely differing aspects is a commendable trait, and in this the Mohanu medan far excels the average professor of Christianity. One who was intimately associated with the transactions tells the Manawatu Times that during the first Dunedin exhibition a number of Hindus conducted profitable stalls in the building and banked their savings in the Post Office Savings Bank. At its close they drew the whole of their funds, but one principle strictly inculcated by the Prophet, was that they may not accept interest, so this was invariably placed in the hospital box jn-the presence of a responsible official. In one day the funds were thus augmented by £BO. The death occurred on Monday night, at Christchurch, of Mrs. Kershaw re--^r - J°hn Kershaw, of Wellington (who was for so many years movable secretary for New Zealand of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, M.U.).
