NEW ZEALAND IRON ORE.
. — : ♦ 1 — JUSTIFIES EXPLOITATION. LORD’ CHETWYND’S INQUIRIES. LONDON, Sept, 30. Among the many undoubted advantages of the B.E.E. is the fact that inquiries from different industries in search of new fields for expansion have had their .attention drawn to sources, sometimes unexpected, of natural supplies waiting to be exploited. Such an instance is afforded by the inquiries directed to the Bureau of Information at the New Zealand Pavilion in Wembley to which Viscount Chotwyml, formerly managing director of the National Shell Filling Factory, lately paid a visit. It should be .added that Lord Chetwynd is related by marriage with the Vickers family, Air .Douglas Vickers being his brother-in-law. ■ Lord Chetwynd’s visit was made to inquire into the iron ore resources of the Dominion as to its possibilities as raw material for a manufacturing industry. He is of opinion that, as soon as the Dominion can show a consumption of 80,000 tons of iron and steel a year, production from the Para oars and Puakaka deposits would he a payable proposition. The quality of the ore, as disclosed bv the Government Geological Department's reports. Viscount Chetwynd considers quite good. Britain is working poorer ore successfully He is of opinion, too, that the production of iron and steel in 1923 amounted to 22,614 tons (bar, holt and rod), and 9614 tens of pig and scrap iron, so that the Dominion would appear al-ready-to'he sufficiently in need of iron products to warrant early consideration of schemes for exploiting her own iron ore.
