HAWERA DISTRICT
VALUATION QUESTION. •‘ A GRATE INJUSTICE. ” QUESTION BY MR CORRIGAN. MR MASSEY SYMPATHETIC. [At meetings of various local authorities, in the Hawera district the complaint has been voiced that, as the Valuations of the. Borough and County were made during the boom period; the consequent contributions to • the Patea Harbour Board were unjustly heavy. As. a result of representation made, Mr Corrigan ventilated this matter in the House of Representatives yesterday, and Mr Massey’s reply, as quoted by the Star’s Parliamentaiy reporter, was sympathetic.] (Bv Telegraph—Special to the Star.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 6. A reduction of £1 in the Valuation Department’s estimates was moved by Mr (Jojrigan as a protest against the the Department- to revalue Haweraßorough and the County of Hawera.; Tlie county was valued in 1919 and the borough'in 1922, with the result, that grave injustice was.,done to these areas. In connection with the Patea harbour district ;Hawera borough wa s nbw . paying three : times the harbour >rate it paid in 1922, ■- \ Mr ''Masters strongly supported the protest, declaring that the position applied to nearly all Taranaki eobnties, which;were valued at the boom period. Mr; Massey replied that he understood the position. Much of the land in Taranaki was over-valued, and the Department would undertake the revaluation of Hawera county next 3 year. He Would be quite willing to extend it to the whole of Taranaki if the staff permitted, but this was the difficulty. Mr Corrigan did not press his amendment.
