A strange drug which destroys fear and creates valour is reported to have been discovered in South America. Results Of a diagnostical study of this recently-discovered drug are to he laid before the Convention of the American V harmaceutical Association in Buffalo. Chemical tests of the drug are at n resent being made in New York The drug is called “Caani,” and is obtained from a plant growing in the central part of the basin of the Amazon It is also called “Syahuasos ” and it was discovered by the Mulford Expedition m its recent explorations of the Amarnn basin ; In South-Eastern Colombia Caam is drunk freely by the natives for the purpose of putting them in proper trim to drive away devils. During their .wild dances the natives scourge each other until their bodies are covered with welts of blood. Thev the “Caapi” while being beaten each participant playing some sort of musical instrument. If one displays the least of suffering the evil spirit within him is declared to have won the contest. The “Canpi” plant is abundant in the Amazon basin, and can be supplied at small cost if found to be of value, say th e experts.
