GAMING BILL.
DISTRIBUTION OF PERMITS. Referring to the Gaming Bill the New Zealand Referee, in its issue of October 30 says: There now seems every prospect that the Gaming Bill will be passed this reason, and if that is the case trotting will receive the additional number qf permits which have been so long asked for. There can be no doubt that the growi n°popularity of the sport entities' it to more permits than are at present available, and an increase in the number will be a great encouragement to those who are responsible for its welfare. The distribution of the permits will require some consideration,, but there are one or two districts whose claims cannot be overlooked. Wellington, for instance; has but one day’s trotting in the year under present conditions; the province of Taranaki has onlv one tota'lisator club, the Waimate Plains Club at Hawern; Hawke’s Bay has no totali6ator club at all ; and Southland, the home of so many keen trotting enthusiasts, has hut two clubs, Gore and Winton, v-'' ’ one day each during the year. Ashburton has- long suffered a grievance owing to the loss of a day that was taken away through an- admitted error. and there are several one-day clubs that have clearly established their claims to an extra day
