AUCKLAND’S FAREWELL.
LORD JELLICOE’S DEPARTURE. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIONAUCKLAND. Nov. 4. A memorable demonstration of popular affection will be Lord and Lady Jellicoe’s last and happiest memory of Auckland. Several thousand people assembled at the railway station to bid farewell when their Excellencies left for the south by the Main Trunk express to-night. The First Battalion Auckland Regiment provided the guard of honour, and as the party turned to enter the station the band struck up “Auld Lang Syne,” the crowd singing, followed by cheers Then came the most remarkable tribute of all. His Excellency stepped forward to acknowledge the ovation, but the occasion overcame him and his speech resolved itself into one word. With a mighty wave of his naval cap he shouted “Goodbye,” thousands wav. ing back their responses. Then three sides of the square of people collapsed, the people closing about the vice-regal party, which in single file entered the station, amidst hand-shaking and expressions of farewell.
