The mandate commission of the League of Nations considered the section dealing with the New Guinea reportj- Sir Joseph Cook (Australian High Commissioner) and Mr. Fuhrman appeared. before the commission for examination. Sir Joseph Cook, replying to the chairman’s questions, said there were no military fortresses, military or naval .bases, or any native military organisations, and there were no police forces charged with the defence of the territory, but only .a police force for the maintenance of internal .order. The natives were guaranteed freedom of conscience, and were subject to provisions and ordinances for the maintenance of public order and morals. There was free exercise for all forms of worship. Sir Joseph Cook added that there . was no slavery. The financial positions will be discussed tomorrow, also probably the question of Nauru.

The opium conference, to which Australia, was invited, opened to-day. It is considering the Eastern aspects.
