RAILWAY WORKS.
TARANAKI—AUCKLAND. The matter of the Taranaki-Auckland railway has been a vexed question in the district for some time, and, though ii; is conceded that the Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) has done, and is doing, his utmost for the country in general, the following received by Mr. E. Dixon, president of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce, is not reassuring. The Minister intimated that the floods reported will retard work generally. The Minister telegraphed to Mr. Dixon in the following terms ; “Referring to your telegram of 3rd inst. regarding Taranaki-Auckland railway. In reply, I wish to say that the Government consider the work one of the foremost importance. Unfortunately, floods and other causes have been responsible for holding up work'of general railroad construction fo-r about eighteen months. However. I wish to assure you that every effort will he made to accelerate the work in hand, and that the- final results .will be quite satisfactory. ”
