AUCKLAND MEETING. SOME SURPRISES. (Special to StarA AUCKLAND, Nov. 4. The spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club concluded in line weather, before an attendance that did not appear to be as large as in many former years. The race track was ’in nice racing condition, although not fast. Amongst the visitors were Viscount and Viscountess Jellicoe and suite, who paid their farewell visit to an Auckland race meeting Lapidary was* installed a £260 better favourite than Diamond Moon for the Normanby Plate, with Gauntlet also well supported. Beginning better than on the previous day, the good-looking Sandstar was quickly in front and kept this position all the way. Diamond Moon and Lapidary wei*e just in behind him. Turning for home, and despite the fact that the riders of Lapidary and Whetunui made great- attempts to head off Sandstar, the lastnamed hung on to win from Lapidary and the unlucky Whetunui. Landbird (£2700) was backed as a “good thing” for the Manukau Hurdles, Pine Arch (£1450), Narrow Neck and Mia Bella (just over £1200) being the only others supported to any extent. As usual, King Abbey tried to win all the way, but Landbird was never far away, and he took the lead from King Abbey seven furlongs from home, only to nearly fall at the next jump. This mistake cost Lundbird many lengths, and incidentally the race, for in a great finish Mia, Bella just beat him, with ?Miss Melva a poor third. Pine Arch, Narrow Neck, and Just Quietly fell. Despite an indifferent showing on the opening day Pavo £1530) wa, s best supported fo.r the Epsom Handicap. Motley (£1300) was a good second choice. The consistent Dan Quin, although having Gray’s services, only carried just over £BOO. When the barrier rose Finelli quickly got to the lead, and rounding the home turn was, attended by Pouma., Pavo and Dan Quin over the last furlong. A great race eventuated, Gray riding a finish to land Dgn Quin a winner from Broadwood with Finelli inches away third. . Rnapapa. was a big favourite for the King Edward Handicap, and but for being unlucky in being “pocketed,” wo.uld certainly have won. Son o’ Mine led most of the way from Mount Marta and a well-bunched field. At the straight, entrance Gold Jacket got a lucky opening and soon had a commanding lead. A hundred yards from the post Rnapapa got clear,’ and Stork put in a great finishing run, but Gold J acket was lucky enough to beat Rnapapa by ,a head, with Stork a similar distance away. Passin’ Thro’ a.nd ‘Mary Bruce, were evenly hacked for the Onehunga Steeples, with Never Despair a good third favourite, Roller was .the early leader from Never Despair 1 and Te Maire. Roller fell after going twelve furlongs and Never Despair then took charge and. well ridden by Bowden, he was never afterwards threatened, and won easily from Peter Amans, which ran on well to beat Passin’ Tliro’. After going half the distance Tuki fell and Te Maire followed suit. The Thorn was made a £2OOO better favourite than Hyde Park for the Musket Stakes, but while Hyde Park got out best of the- runners, The Thorn was slow to move. Hyde Park was never headed, and won nicely from Romantic and Air Queen, both of which were lucky to, hold off the fast finishing The Thorn. Several horses were well supported for the Hobson Handicap, The Lamb (£1250), Archibald (£1100), and Desert Glow (£920) getting most support. From an excellent start _The Lamb was soon in charge, hut after going a couple of furlongs Shut Eye joined him and the pair set a. torrid pace. Shut Eye retired a furlong from home, and, well nursed by Gray, The Lamb led till the last half-chain, at which stage Spoony ancl Desert Glow passed him, half heads dividing the trio. The racing concluded with the Liverpool Welter, for which event Town Bank was made a big favourite from Raceful. Town Bank did not enjoy a good passage and was beaten into second place by Lady Ridicule, which slipped the field, to win easily. .Toy Ride and Raceful fought out a good battle for third place. CONCLUDING DAY AT GISBORNE. GISBORNE, Nov. 3. The second day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting, which was postponed from Saturday on account of rain, was held to-day in good weather. The totalisator investments were £16,402, compared with £15,479 on the second day last year. The total for the two days was £31,945, against £28,007 last year, an increase of £3038.
