HARBOUR RATES.
HA WET? A’S LA RGE QUOTA. re valuation the cause. c . r< tPly Cr. • Morrissey’s request ror information concerning the 1 striking of a rate this year by the Patea Harbour Board was made by the chairman (Mr, A. T. Christensen) at a meeting or the hoard yesterday The chairman said that Hawera had a grievance in that their valuation had gone up. but that was not the fault of the board. The amount of rates paid to the Harbour Board by the citizens of the Hawera, boroush was now twice as much as that paid be!ore the revaluation, the total havf,;om about £3BO to over t-iono, but the Hawera. County was in £ somewhat similar position, their harbour rates having also risen in proportion to their valuation. The Patea Comity, on the other hand, had not been revalued since 1915, and their harbour rates were accordingly proportionately low. t The unfortunate part was that the 'board had no power to differentiate in the matter of rating. It had been necessary to strike a rate this year, and as far as the collection of the money was concerned every effort had been made to get in what was owing. In connection with expenditure the board’s commitments were the least costly in proportion to its .size in the Dominion. The chairman dealt with the position of the board’s finances, he stating that no money from the interest account had been utilised for the purposes of the general account. After some discussion it was decided that the chairman and Mr. E. A. Pacey wait on the Hawera Town Clerk and fully explain the position.
