For the .first day of the Victorian , Racing Club’s spring meeting iim weather was fine after a night of ra>n. There was an enormous attend race, including several New. Zealanders, the Governor-General, the State Governor and the Governor of New South Wales. Metellus led always in the Ma-deri Plate, and won easily. It was a great race. In the Marybymorig Plate Manacie' was always prominent, and won par-' rowly. The winner cost 210 guineas.' Man acre had two wins and a second in three starts. F.. Dempsey rode Metellus and Manacr#. Gloaming was cheered with great -enthusiasm on entering the course. Gloaming looked a winner below the distance and came on the outside. The first two furlongs were done in 27isec., the next two in 24-J, and the succeedr ing two in the same time, the last mile being covered in 1.39^. Spearfelt .registered the easiest win ever witnessed in the Derby. Spearfelt’s trainer is the New Zealander, Mr Y. O’Neill, and the horse was ridden by the New Zealand jockey, G. Young, "who; also won the Melbourne Stakes. Spearfelt was lotidly cheered.- Spearfelt Has 7.6 in the Melbourne Cup. There was a good race in the Cantala Stakes. Barometer’s connections in the Mitchelson Cup had hard luck, as the horse collided, with a spectator when in the leading position. The spectator (H. Diver), of Ohehunga, tinder the impression that the horses had already passed, walked bn to the course, resulting in a. collision which put Barometer out of the race, while Diver was sent to hospital with somewhat painful injuries.
