A writer gives in the “Nouvelles Litteraires” of Pari s the result of the inquiry opened by the Society of Tree Lovers for the purpose of electing a king of trees. “The oak obtained the greater number of votes, far more than any other tree,” he says, “and the pine comes next. A curious point is that none of the trees chosen—oak, pine fir cypress, willow and others—bear any eatable fruits. Nobody mentioned such trees as the cherrv tree, the orange tree, the apple or the pear tree. None thought of the laurel, sacred in all times, or of the majestic plane.”
