TAXI-GONDOLAS.
REPLACE PLEASURE BOATS. ROME, Sept. 13. Ail the gondolas of Venice are to be equipped with motors. In. vain artistic societies, Italian newspapers, and tourist agents have protested. Sentence has been pronounced definitely on the picturesque sight of the gondola slipping silently through the canals of Venice, propelled by the gon-doiiery-preferably a tenor—leaning gracefully on his long-slantmg oar. In the name of progress and by order of the Royal Commissioner Ciordana, r °TT^ a ? c '^ ar 2e of the administration of Venice for the King, the city has signed a contract _ with the local electric- company. Within 'twenty months there must be a motor in every gondola. .
