HAWERA’S WANTS.
NEED PUSHING. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night, the newly-elected president (Mr E. Dixon) emphasised the necessity there was for a live chamber in this town. Mr Dixon said that the chamber had done a great deal of good work in the past, and added that a glance through the records of the past 20 years would astonish any who made the investigation. Hawera to-day was in a very different position to' that which it was in a few years ago, and the necessity for a really live chamber of commerce was a very real one. There was a chance of Hawera being left behind, for while it had been resting on its oars, thinking that it would go ahead by reason of the fact that it was in the centre of a rich dairying district, and do what we might' we could not stop it, other towns had been pushing themselves. The time had come when these other towns were looking for pre-eminence, and Hawera must push her claims and see that she received fair treatment. Mr Dixon asked for the strong backing of the members of the chamber, and said he took up the position of president realising the responsibility which would be his.
