HALLOWEEN.
ENJOYABLE CHILDREN’S EVENING y ’Twas the best children’s gathering- / that I ever attended.” So quoth a V mother of three small girls as she f piloted them through the rain at 10 | o’clock last night at the conclusion of ! the Scottish Society’s “Halloween ’ Nicht.” It was almost a welcome fact that, the weather was so unsuitable, for if it had been fine it is likely that the Foresters’ Hall would not have held all the young people who would have been there.' Those who braved the elements were amply rewarded. The orchestra led off with some spirited selections, and then the young ones took charge. Blind man’s buff,’sticking on the pig’s tail, dookih’; for apples, , nut scrambles, and what not, kept them all going. At times to give breathing spaces, single items ' were given. A youthful Harry Lauder, with a freckled face and in national garb, sang “She’s the lass for me” as though he meant it. Another declared hi s willingness to “lay me doon and dee for Annie Laurie!” A youthful trio sang about the moon, and a very young lady imitated for the moment a woman of mature years and told of her experiences when the “bairnies cuddle doon at nicht,” and one of Miss Moore’s pupils danced a seantriubhas very tastefully. Of course, after all this dry work something wet was required, and so saucerfull s of trembling jelly and bass of sweets were handed i round, and the boys all tried to make j themselves sick with mugs of lemonade. ! A nut scramble also provided much i diversion. During the evening the chil- I dren weiv> told of one -theorv for the ! adoption by Scotland of the thistle as I a national emblem. A couple of Maori i vams delighted them, and Mr. Smart ■ thom something of the origin of ! the festival “A"1 d Lang Syne” ter- i min a ted an exceedingly happy, evening. 1
