A.s the high-priced -Australian-bred colt Mimetic 'was allowed to forfeit his Auckland engagements, he has evidently not made the improvement expected. A lot of money went on the moderate Lady Comet at the Waikato Hunt Club meeting, and she ultimately ran second, but a very poor one. Cherry Ripe winning by 10 lengths. J.ii Gauntlet, trainer Jell'erd has a lillv that can gallop fast, and this may be shown in the Gordon Handicap at Ellerslie to-morrow. The Thorn fan well, but somewhat "green” at Trcntbam, but favoured by these runs !\lr. Currie’s two-year-old may run well in the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie on Monday. As usual, the acceptances for the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting are large, and “punters” will want all the luck available to hold their own. The connections of Te Kara fancy that gelding for the Mitchelson Cup, to he run at Ellerslie to-morrow, and even Lough re a is not feared by the northerners. The Absurd —Shrill colt, Father’s Voice, returned from Sydney to-day, where lie lias raced well, but without winning much money. If kept, to races over, say, six furlong courses, Fathers Voice might have clone well, for last season he was one of our most brilliant youngsters, hut, -like the majority of his sire’s stock, stopped quickly when •‘pinched.” Cherry Ripe won his “double” very easily at the Waikato Hunt Club’s gathering. At the time of writing his re-handicap has not appeared, but it may take a good rise to stop him. Glentui tired over the last half-mile of the Hunt Club Cup at’Waikato last Monday, but over the shorter distance at Ellerslie to-morrow should do better. Llewellyn may trouble him on this ' track.
York Abbey showed a lot of pace in his race at Te Rapa last Monday, and it would not be surprising should R. Hannon again unearth a good sprinter in this soil of Quin Abbey. On Refemoana’s form at Trentham on Monday he will be one of the favourites if started for the Stewards’ Handicap. He is undoubtedly a good one and must be hard to beat at Riccarton. .. Loughrea ha s a big load (9.12) in the Mitchelson Gup, to be decided at Ellerslie to-morrow; but he is such a good one that he must run well, and may prove hard to beat either day. Tarleton finished so well in the Champion Plate at Trentharn that one must seriously consider his chance in the New Zealand Cup, for when well Tarleton is capable of staying Tuahine showed great speed after setting left badly in her race at the Waikato Hunt Club’s meeting, and the writei*, will be much surprised should Mr. Williams’ , filly riot do .well when ridden by R„ Reed in the Great Northern Guineas to-morrow. Judged on his two good performances at the Avondale meeting. Autome must be a good two-year-old-but despite his record it may be found that the Dunedin-owned Circulation is equal at least to giving 'Autome his hardest face, if not actually heating him.
