A SAD CASE
FATHER MURDERS HIS CHILD. ACQUITTED' OF MURDER. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 31. Harry Joseph Peters Keogh, aged 43, '.who cut the throat of his infant child on August 5, Avas acquitted on the inurder charge on the groiifids of insanity. Drs Fullerton and Murray, giving evidence for the Crown, deposed that Keogh was incapable of knowing the nature and quality of his act and of knoAving it was wfoqg. Dr. Beattie, mental hospital superintendent, said Keogh appeared coherent the morning after the tragedy. A severe shock often transformed an abnormal man to normal condition tern porarily. There was no reason why the evidence of the former doctors should not be correct.
“I can never be abb to say my client did not commit the act,” said Mr Johnstone, ‘but the jury should acquit on the grounds of insanity.” Judge Herdman said it Avas the saddest of sad cases. In the face of the evidence the only conclusion he could come to Avas that of insanity. Keogh was ordered to be detained in strict custody in Mt. Eden prison till the pleasure of the Minister of Justice is knoAvn.
