BOWLING.
H4WERA CLUB COMPETITIONS. Notwithstanding the. vagaries associated with the weather conditions in Taranaki at this time of the year there has been quite a lot of play on the above club’s green, and bowlers are beginning to get the “feel” of their bowls. The green is rapidly showing signs of getting “tuned up” for the season, and the result has been seen'in the many fine games played recently. Although no inter-club games have yet been played, members are keeping the Ferns and Buttbns competitions moving along. A great deal of interest always centres in these local games, members getting the maximum of enjoyment •which is usually displayed in the friendly rivalry between holders and. challengers. The first game this season in the A Ferns competition was played on Wednesday, 15th inst., when the holders from last season managed to score a win by the narrow margin of one point against the following challengers: Shaw, Skjellerup, J. Barkla, Corkill 23; holders,. Winks, T. Tait, Haughton, R. Hicks 24. On Wednesday, 22nd inst., the A Ferns were again played for, and after a well-contested game the holders met defeat. by two points at the hands of the challengers'. Holders, Vv r inks, T. Tait, Haughton, R. Hicks 20; challengers, Herbert, J. Hicks, Hodge, R. Tait 22.' \ Only one game in the A Buttons competition has been played as yet this season. The present holders finished iip last season with a run of 12 consecutive wins, thus equalling the record made in this competition a few years back. This record was put up by a rink skipped by the old veteran player R. Hicks, who had associated with him the now late J. P. Keen, A. Dunlop and W. Grant, and has held good for about six or seven years. Naturally when this record became ! equalled, and there was every possibility of it being beaten, very keen interest was aroused in the first match of the season to decide whether a fresh (record was established. The challenging team which took ‘‘the field” last .Saturday in an attempt to stem the tide of success tvhicli had followed the holders were unable to do so,-an cl the present holders came in easy winners once again; thus creating a fresh record of 13 consecutive wins. The success of the present record holders has been to a grea/b extent due to their being “well in tune,” which always tells iii the game of howls, and great credit is due -to them dor their steady and consistent play throughout. The challenging rink was,McDonald. Squire; O’Gorman, Foy 13; record holders, Maslin, Poole, Adamson, Hulbert 30. In the A Ferns competition which was played yesterday the* holders (Herbert, J. Hicks, Hodge, R. Tait) 28. were able to stall off a challenge issued by Colelough, TidswelJ, Shaw, Skiellerup 23. • OPENING OF RAHOTU GHEEN.
