NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas.) Old Te Toa was going well in second place when he fell on landing during the running of the Hunt Club Cup on Monday. Cherry Ripe (Nassau —Cherry Roe), which won two hunter races at the recent Waikato Hunt Club’s gathering, is well enough bred to win in any class.

The Marton owned and trained Adrienne won the rich hunt cup of Waikato in easy fashion, due largely to a faultless exhibition of jumping. The course of jumping Avhich Boomerday underwent during the winter has not > impaired his pace, while he appears to stay on better. He won the chief flat race at the Waikato Hunt Club’s meeting in a most convincing manner.

A number of two-year-olds were sprinted at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Monday last, and of them Judge’s Box (Nassau-Brayton) showed to most advantage and she will certainly pay her way. She carries the livery of Mr. G. L. Stead. Welbeck Abbey (Quin Abbey—Donation), who will race in Mr. R. Hannon’s colours, also went well. Gauntlet, by Martian from the imported mare Torquato, which cost the East Coast sportsman Mr. A. 81.B 1 . Williams somewhere in the vicinity of 1200 guineas, was a runner at the Waikato Hunt Club’s gathering, and showed pace enough to suggest that he may do well at the Auckland meeting next week. The Avondale Guineas winner Tualiine was a runner for the chief sprint event at Waikato on Monday, but got hopelessly left, being last • but one of a strung-out field leaving the barrier. Showing great speed, Tuahine looked a “possibility” at the home turn, but ran wide. On this showing Tuahine will be hard to beat in the Northern Guineas.

The Waikato Racing Club’s new course at Te Rapa was opened by the Waikato Hunt Club’s fixture, which eventuated on Monday last before a very large attendance. The race track lias been formed for a considerable time and is a splendid one (quite the equal of any in the Dominion), The course proper is 1J miles in circumference. At present a temporary stand is being used, but this has seating accommodation for 3000 persons. Tanadees was allowed to forfeit liis Wellington engagements and was taken to Ellerslie by his owner last Saturday. If as good as his admirers think, the Australian-bred tliree-year-old should be quite equal to winning that good prize, the Auckland Guineas, in which event nothing holding good performances is engaged. After racing at Ellerslie, Tanadees will be immediately entrained for Wellington, eu route to the Canterbury meeting, where he will encounter Nigger Minstrel in the Derby, who looks certain to beat Tanadees.

By the death of Mr. J. George, one of the best trainer s this province has known is removed. Over a lengthy eareer the late Mr. George trained winners of many important races, including iParitutu (Auckland Racing Club Handicap and Grand National Steeplechase), Royal Arms (Grand National Hurdles), and Alteration (Wellington Winter Hurdles). The familiar figure of the deceased sportsman will be much missed from our courses, and to his relatives we offer our sympathy. The owner of Royal Despatch (Mr. Knight) made it known on his return from Sydney to New Zealand that he was hopeful the New Zealand Racing Conference would reopen the cases of F. D. Jones and M. McCarten, and if so, felt that their disqualifications would not lie endorsed. Several sporting writers inferred that the reopening of this famous case was a. foregone conclusion, but we never subscribed to this view, it being pointed out at the time that such a procedure would cause a rupture of racing reciprocation with Australia.- In last week’s issue of the official organ notice appears of the endorsement of the disqualifications, so from this it would appear as if the racing authorities' of this Dominion do not wish to interfere with the finding of their Australian friends. As it is generally believed in ’ New Zealand that Jones and McCarten are 1 innocent, this further act in an un--1 satisfactory .-racing case has removed all chance of redress.
